morning & Evening

Meital Linderberg writes, "The way in which a person gets up in the morning indicates their general emotional state, and influences one actions throughout the day. A person with a purpose in life arises filled with enthusiasm to face a new day. One who is filled with purpose usually wakes up early in the morning, in order to accomplish more throughout the day. However, a person who has lost their values and sense of purpose lacks meaning in their life and a reason to get up in the morning. Instead, they may feel fatigued and distressed in the morning. Only when left with no choice do they finally wake up, late and sluggish, to another dull day."[1]

Psalm 5:3
In the morning, Lord, You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will present my prayer to You and be on the watch.

Psalm 55:17
Evening and morning and at noon, I will complain and moan, And He will hear my voice.

Psalm 59:16-17

16 But as for me, I will sing of Your strength;
Yes, I will joyfully sing of Your faithfulness in the morning,
For You have been my refuge
And a place of refuge on the day of my distress.

17 My strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my refuge, the God who shows me favor.

Psalm 141:2

May my prayer be counted as incense before You;

The raising of my hands as the evening offering.

Rising Prayer

O Unslumbering Trinity,

As You have been in my sleeping,

So be in my waking,

Fill this day with the light of Your presence:

I offer it to You as it’s given to me,

A gift of love,

That its ending may be as its beginning,

Hallowed by thankful prayer, Amen.

Prayer Before Sleeping

O Unslumbering Trinity,

As You have been in my waking,

So be in my sleeping,

Fill this night with the peace of Your presence:

I offer it to You as it’s given to me,

A gift of love,

That its ending may be as its beginning,

Hallowed by thankful prayer, Amen.

Bedtime Shema (Traditional Jewish Prayer before Sleep)

Adonai, may it be Your will that I lie down in peace and rise up in peace. Let not my thoughts, my dreams, or my daydreams disturb me. Watch over my family and those I love. O Guardian of Israel, who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:3-4), I entrust my spirit to You. Thus as I go to sleep, I put myself into Your safekeeping. Grant me a night of rest. Let the healing processes that You have placed into my body go about their work. May I awaken in the morning, refreshed and renewed to face a new tomorrow. Hear, O Israel, Adonai our God, Adonai is One! We praise You, Adonai, Whose shelter of peace is spread over us, over all Your people Israel, over every creation, and over Jerusalem.

Hashkiveinu (Lie us down to peace)

Hashkiveinu (Lie us down to peace)

Lie us down to peace, Adonai our God, and raise us up to life, our king (protector) , and spread over us the shelter of your peace, and direct us with good advice before You, and save us for the sake of your name, and look out for us, and keep enemies, plagues swords, famines, and troubles from our midst, and remove Satan from in front of us and from behind us, and cradle us in the shadow of your wings, for You are God who guards us and saves us, for You are God. Our gracious and merciful king (protector). Guard our departure and our arrival to life and to peace, from now and ever more.
